Chapter Twenty-Three
Dylan
Christine and Carl didnât need me anymore because Eddie bought a Mustang. A Mustang! Where the heck did he get the money for a Mustang? It wasnât brand new, but close enough. Whatever.
I kicked a chunk of ice in the parking lot halfway between my car and the school. I turned to glance back at my shiny, black Charger and wondered how everyone would react if I drove my Mercedes to school.
Nah, Iâm not a show-off. That was the opposite of what I wanted for my life here in Petoskey. I wanted to lay low. Just keep my head down, go to class, go to practice, go to games, and wait for Eddie to screw up.
It had been a long couple of weeks. Before Eddie came home, Iâd spent every possible minute with Christine. Weâd had classes together, tutoring, practicing in the gym, driving her to and from school, making out in the gym. I didnât want to think about what she was doing with Eddie.
âAghh!â I cried out into the cold air.
âFrustrated?â Matt called to me.
âDonât startle me like that, man.â I hadnât realized anyone else was in the parking lot. It was dark, and the only reason I was out here was to grab my gym bag from my car. I was supposed to be in practice. For that matter, so was Matt. âWhat are you doing?â
âForgot my practice jersey,â Matt said, holding up his shirt. âMy mom washed it for me.â
âIt needed to be washed.â I wrinkled my nose, remembering yesterdayâs tough practice.
âWhy donât you just talk to her, dude?â
âI donât know what you mean.â I cleared my throat as we kept walking.
âYeah, right.â Matt was close enough that he pushed my shoulder. âShe probably misses you as much as you miss her.â
âSheâs got Eddie now.â I sneered and wrinkled my nose. âSheâs got everything she needs.â
âI heard heâs dealing again,â Matt mumbled.
âWhat?â I stopped him by the arm. âNo.â
âI thought youâd be happy,â Matt said. âIf he screws up, sheâll be free again.â
âI donât want her just because sheâs free again. I want her to choose me because Iâm who she wants to be with.â
âWell, give her time. Eddieâs exciting, but heâs not the kind of guy a girl wants to be with forever.â
âI donât think sheâs thinking that far ahead,â I said. We came to the school, and I opened the door for Matt. The warmth of the hallway was welcome after the bitter winds in the parking lot. The characteristic squeaking of sneakers echoed from the gym. We were so late.
Practice was brutal but not as bad as the day before. We got out earlier than the girls. I was tempted to go over and watch the last few minutes along with the other guys but decided against it. Instead, I wandered down toward my locker to grab my math book.
The guysâ bathroom in the east hallway was dark, but I heard voices inside, so I crept up to eavesdrop. Some guy had a chick in there, and from the sound of it, they were making out, if not more.
