Chapter Twenty-Three

Dylan

Christine and Carl didn’t need me anymore because Eddie bought a Mustang. A Mustang! Where the heck did he get the money for a Mustang? It wasn’t brand new, but close enough. Whatever.

I kicked a chunk of ice in the parking lot halfway between my car and the school. I turned to glance back at my shiny, black Charger and wondered how everyone would react if I drove my Mercedes to school.

Nah, I’m not a show-off. That was the opposite of what I wanted for my life here in Petoskey. I wanted to lay low. Just keep my head down, go to class, go to practice, go to games, and wait for Eddie to screw up.

It had been a long couple of weeks. Before Eddie came home, I’d spent every possible minute with Christine. We’d had classes together, tutoring, practicing in the gym, driving her to and from school, making out in the gym. I didn’t want to think about what she was doing with Eddie.

“Aghh!” I cried out into the cold air.

“Frustrated?” Matt called to me.

“Don’t startle me like that, man.” I hadn’t realized anyone else was in the parking lot. It was dark, and the only reason I was out here was to grab my gym bag from my car. I was supposed to be in practice. For that matter, so was Matt. “What are you doing?”

“Forgot my practice jersey,” Matt said, holding up his shirt. “My mom washed it for me.”

“It needed to be washed.” I wrinkled my nose, remembering yesterday’s tough practice.

“Why don’t you just talk to her, dude?”

“I don’t know what you mean.” I cleared my throat as we kept walking.

“Yeah, right.” Matt was close enough that he pushed my shoulder. “She probably misses you as much as you miss her.”

“She’s got Eddie now.” I sneered and wrinkled my nose. “She’s got everything she needs.”

“I heard he’s dealing again,” Matt mumbled.

“What?” I stopped him by the arm. “No.”

“I thought you’d be happy,” Matt said. “If he screws up, she’ll be free again.”

“I don’t want her just because she’s free again. I want her to choose me because I’m who she wants to be with.”

“Well, give her time. Eddie’s exciting, but he’s not the kind of guy a girl wants to be with forever.”

“I don’t think she’s thinking that far ahead,” I said. We came to the school, and I opened the door for Matt. The warmth of the hallway was welcome after the bitter winds in the parking lot. The characteristic squeaking of sneakers echoed from the gym. We were so late.

Practice was brutal but not as bad as the day before. We got out earlier than the girls. I was tempted to go over and watch the last few minutes along with the other guys but decided against it. Instead, I wandered down toward my locker to grab my math book.

The guys’ bathroom in the east hallway was dark, but I heard voices inside, so I crept up to eavesdrop. Some guy had a chick in there, and from the sound of it, they were making out, if not more.
